Is it here, there, or is it somewhere else? Maybe, elsewhere. The Institution is a documentary of a corporate initiative to create a story wound around a fictional continuation of real life events and placed into the streets of San Francisco in a kind of puzzle like reality game. Imagine geocaching, city guide tours or crime solving with subtle hints and hidden clues everywhere you go. As you tread along the path paved by the story, you unravel mysterious facts and a new reality emerges. The reality of the game. But as players delve into the puzzle, they crawl along sewage drains and unlock doors or enter buildings where the unweary may never, not even notice, even though lying in front of our naked eyes, they follow their instincts and find a new reality. In Oakland there is a church called Chapel of the Chimes, behind it the cemetery holds urns that are shaped like books. The glass windows open to the urns that converts the holy ground to a place that looks like a huge library, pages, memories that are dear to the living. A place that is only a stage of the hunt but is essential. Players are blindfolded and have to follow a path dictated by a female voice over casette recording. A game of trust, a game of faith. The Institute received wide acknowledgement for creating an alternate reality, for opening up people's eyes upon layers of our existence that have been undiscovered before. More like a society, a gathering of men and women with reform thinking, less like a cult, because hot water and a ball of curious leaves is not for drugging members but simply for making tea, this company gave its players more than just a game. A beginning in life to notice the miniscule details, to wrap themselves in adventure that is more lasting than our petty attachment to things. A reality that is beyond the reality. The Institute is now closed due to financial reasons, but its memory lives on and people of the former players still bear the ideas and notions of the game. Thus the documentary, to help build a future for like initiatives. Great job.
